BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

It recently came to the attention of Tampa Bay area musicians and artists that the Lisa McPherson Trust has been literally under attack by the Church of Scientology, its adherents and its various front groups.
Their most recent tactic has been to try to label the Lisa McPherson Trust and its members as religious bigots, and to call the trust a "hate group."  Scientologists have attempted to destroy businesses owned by critics and members of the board of directors of the Lisa McPherson Trust, including handing out fliers to workers at those businesses alleging the directors are affiliated with Nazis and the KKK.   A large group of Scientologists at the Tampa airport recently greeted a German Government representative with chants of "Nazi go home," primarily because she had scheduled a press conference at the Lisa McPherson Trust to expose immigration and tax fraud by a German Scientologist.  Several peaceful picketers of Scientology's "spiritual headquarters" in Clearwater have been physically assaulted by Scientologists in the past few months.

Many of the board members of the Lisa McPherson Trust are former Scientologists, and their stated goal is to educate the public as to the true nature of Scientology and its methods, as well as to help those who want to leave the group.  The Lisa McPherson Trust states that its objectives include:  Exposing the Church of Scientology's abuse of the human, civil and privacy rights of its members and critics.  Revealing its deceptive advertising practices that border on consumer fraud.  They will bring to light those "religious practices" that violate civil or criminal law.  They help people in recovering from their unique personal experience with the abusive and deceptive practices of the Church of Scientology.  They offer counsel to Scientologists who choose to hear the truth about how the Church of Scientology uses deceptive mind control techniques.  Their dedicated staff provides the information, love and support to Scientologists that enables them to release the bonds of cult mind control.

We at Mr. Scary Productions chose to become involved and to work with area volunteers to organize this benefit concert out of a desire to help educate the public as to the truth about the Lisa McPherson Trust.  A concerted effort has been made by Scientology and its members to depict the trust, and ALL critics of Scientology as criminals, liars, and worse.  The fact is that Scientology is putting to work the writings of  L. Ron Hubbard, which included this doctrine regarding critics-  "Always attack, never defend."

The story of Lisa McPherson's death broke in 1996, a year after she died at the hands of Scientology, after 17 days of being held against her will in the Ft. Harrison Hotel in Clearwater.  As the details of her tragic and senseless death began to be publicized, more and more people across the country came together to oppose the abuses occurring in the Church of Scientology.

The Lisa McPherson Trust believes in religious freedom for all, but they do not believe that anyone has the right to engage in behavior that violates other people's rights, or the laws of the land.
