Picket Footage

Benetta Slaughter Interview

March 8, 1997

In this clip from Jeff Jacobsen, Bennetta Slaughter is being interviewed by a reporter as a picket is being held in Clearwater in Lisa McPherson's memory.

Bennetta was Lisa McPherson's boss at AMC Publishing.

When Bob Minton announced that he was going to open up a group to be named the Lisa McPherson Foundation, Bennetta quickly registered that name for herself leading Bob to eventually name his group, The Lisa McPherson Trust.

Transcript:

Reporter:  "What do you think happened here?"

Benetta:  "Be more specific."

Benetta:  "I think that she died.  I think that she died.  I think that is the sum complicity of it.   There is nothing else there.  There is nothing else there."

"She's a dedicated Scientologist.  She would personally be appalled by what occuring here [the picket].  She would not appreciate this.  She would not want this to happen.  She would not want her name used to trash her church or the reputation of her church, or her friends.  She had many friends here... they would not want this.  They don't want this and she would not want it... it's not right.... all they're trying to do is cause more problems."

Jeff Jacobsen gives some background on this clip:

I'd like to explain the circumstance of this tape.

First, you hear a guy talking to me once in a while.  This guy stayed with me most of the day talking, talking, talking, sometimes nonstop.  I called him my leech.

Secondly, I just sort of accidentally stumbled onto this interview going on with Cheryl Waldrip and Bennetta Slaughter, so I didn't even know quite what I was taping except an interview.

Third, I didn't want to be too intrusive because

a) I'm just not that kinda guy and

b) Bennetta seemed a bit perturbed by me being there at all, as you can see by her mainly having her back to me.

Cheryl put some quotes by Bennetta into an article she wrote for the Tampa Tribune.
